Description:
Me? I teach, travel and write books (non-fiction.) My latest project is a book about orangutans as an endangered species, coming out in the United States in March 2010. So, I've spent some time hiking through the jungles of Borneo and Sumatra. I'd rather go hiking with my dog than go to a party or to a bar. I don't watch sports on TV. Too mindless. Too passive. I don't even let my dog watch sports on TV. It's not good for her either. I'd prefer to jog and work out myself or discuss a book or take a photo or make something. I'm a good listener, a good conversationalist. I've had lots of experiences -- from getting chased by wild pygmy elephants in Borneo, to spending four days on a submarine, to crawling underground through bat caves, to sleeping inside the zoo in Jakarta. And I haven't stopped yet. I'm thinking of what I can do next to exceed what I did last time. If I were to describe myself in terms of music, I'm more jazz than country, more classical than rock, but I can't stop listening to Pink's latest CD, which is inspired. My favorite composer is Satie. If I were to describe myself in terms of food, I'm more stir fry than steak, more salad than quiche, more water from a mountain spring than wine. If I were to describe myself in terms of clothes, I'm more jeans than tuxedo, more hiking boot than alligator shoes, but I will wear a tie when it's least expected. If I came back to life as an insect, I'd be a cricket or a firefly. Crickets make universal music and you can hear them everywhere on the planet. Fireflies are also all around the world and communicate to their mates by shining a little light into the big darkness. So should we all. If I came back to life as a plant I'd be wild thyme, partly because I like the pun. Its Greek name means mountain joy -- and I'm more mountain than city but more river than rock -- and it is medicinal, which means it's contributing something, not just admiring itself. If I were a colour, I'd be terracotta. I can't quite explain why. But I've certainly splashed that colour around the walls of my home, which, by the way, makes the green of your plants stand out incredibly. Other than that, I like the idea of having something to live for. Don't you?
